A Day at the Beach.

Australia has over 10,000 beaches. They are pristine and often deserted. It is possible if you are visiting any of these beaches that your footprints maybe the only ones there. We are surrounded by two mighty oceans and the waves that crash on our shores have travelled many thousands of miles to lap our shores. Beaches are refreshing and the crisp air has a tang of salt and the sharpness of ozone. On some beaches you can smell the faint wisp of drying seaweed and the dryness of drift wood. Mostly it is the smell of the sea itself and as the wind changes other scents come to you. The whiff of wet sand is sharp and noticeable.
There is froth and foam. The rhythmic movement of the waves is soothing and almost hypnotic. Soon your heart will beat at the same time as the waves. As you relax and breathe all this in, a deep calm will seep into your soul. You may not even be aware of this phenomenon. This is why it is so easy to lay on a beach and drink in all this atmosphere. How easy is it to sleep on a beach with the sound of the waves lulling you off into a deep, peaceful sleep?
Then, there is the feast for your eyes. The foam and the crashing of waves as great volumes of sea water collapse in the impact zone with a natural thunder. A cubic metre of water weighs a tonne. The amount of energy here is fascinating. As it expends its energy onto the beach a myriad of flotsam and jetsam is swirled about forming intricate patterns. There are leaves, seagrass, shells, jellyfish and objects that have travelled from far away, just to reach this beach and your toes.
Ripsilver is a perfume that captures all this and more. It is crisp and refreshing. Tangy and refreshing. Your first impression maybe the scent of ”wet sand”, with the salt and ozone creeping in. As it envelops you will notice traces of other faint memories of a deserted beach. The warmth of the sun on hot sand, driftwood, dried sea weed and shells. This scent is “A day at the beach” and will take you there instantly, magically.
I trust you will be fascinated by this scent as I have been in making this perfume. Carefully adding each of the best materials to replicate the total scent picture accurately. Let Ripsilver bring some magic into your day and take you to the beach….…..

Wild Dragons Blood

WILD DRAGON’S BLOOD

(You are dreaming). Somewhere in an enchanted redwood forest you are wandering along a winding path. It’s foggy and cool. There’s a dampness in the air. Your nose picks up faint wafts of moss, lichen and clumps of mushrooms. You notice their orange strange umbrella shapes. The fog swirls about your feet. It clears for a moment and you see for a second a familiar shape. It’s camouflaged with moss and the pattern of leaves. It moves and rears its head looking in your direction. A Dragon!

The dragon holds you in its gaze. Its nostrils are breathing smoke. It roars a deafening roar which shakes the forest.  There is blood dripping from its fangs. You keep perfectly still. For some reason the dragon slinks off into the bush. Was that a warning roar? Cautiously you step forward following the path to the dragon’s lair. A rough bundle of sticks forms a neat circle. It’s a nest. Half covered by some dry leaves you notice three small golden eggs. What do you do now?……..

And that’s how it started. This dream was so powerful that I had to make the smells of the forest, the smoke, the blood and the gold. Then I found a resin called dragon’s blood (dracaena cinnabari). When burnt it makes a beautiful incense, dark, mysterious and smoky. We ground up the hard crystals in a mortar and pestle, added some ethanol and made a deep red tincture. To keep the mystery and the dark Gothic aroma of this perfume, each ingredient was carefully added to preserve the image and the memory of the dream. The deep redness of the dragon’s blood tincture was combined with the strong woodiness of cedarwood oil, a touch of musk, the richness of benzoin and a dash of frankincense. Together with the smokiness of beeswax, labdanum and patchouli for a heady mix. Adding a sprinkling of oakmoss for the deep dankness of the mushrooms and the damp. These are some of the ingredients that combine into a fascinating aroma. Then for a touch of magic real gold leaf is floating in the bottle. You can swirl it around like a snow dome and watch the glitter of gold sparkle in the sunlight. (Maybe make a wish).

I trust you will be fascinated by this dark Gothic forest scent.  I have been making this perfume painstakingly over the last 3 years. Carefully adding each of the best materials to replicate the total scent picture accurately. Let “Wild Dragon’s Blood” bring some magic into your day…..

Enjoy  it today !

Scarlet, the Gypsy.

Scarlet, the gypsy.
As another cool winter approaches Europe, we become surrounded by the delicious smells of Christmas. Steaming puddings with lashings of custard, hot smoky fires and the aroma of gluehwein, the warm spicy wine that heats your blood. (Meanwhile, here in Australia our summer heat has us thinking of beaches and swimming pools). It is not uncommon for spirits to be a little low and people begin to look for cheery things in the festive season. But what about perfumes? Have you thought about a warming cheery, even spicy scent?
Let me introduce you to a wild, slightly naughty gypsy called “Scarlet” by Bud Parfums. She is adorned in bright colours and a high flying swirling dress with passionate flamenco music pumping, thumping and begging you to dance. Your head is filled with the sweet sharpness of cinnamon, the tenderness of bergamot, some juicy orange and mandarin encompass you in a delicious scent. In the distance there is jasmine flowers and the sharpness of tonka beans. What a girl! You instantly forget the cold and are warmed through and through. Passion takes you on a merry dance…… “To hell with winter”, I here you cry and you dance in a heady perfume of spices.
On the edge of the crowd stands a tall striking figure. Almost lurking is “El Diablo” (the devil himself). He is amused by the gypsy, and as the male counterpart feels drawn into the fray. He must become involved as the music pulls him in. He stands and stomps his feet in the flamenco style. There is a hush for a moment as the wafts of clove, cinnamon, black pepper and the strength of cedarwood and sharpness of lime surround the crowd that is now forming.
Together they dance. A perfect match, one female in her essence and the other masculine with the strength of what it is to be a male. The dust swirls in the street. They are oblivious to anything but each other. A heady mix of two passionate perfumes blended beautifully with the music. The joy of a sudden unplanned dance in the street. The boldness and audacity to not “give a damn”. The thrill of letting your hair down and doing what is perfectly natural.
Of course if this wild and reckless behaviour is just not you, then perhaps “Scarlet” and “El Diablo” perfumes by Bud Parfums are only for the truly adventourous……

The Joy of Vanilla

The joy of Vanilla
Ah, vanilla. It’s in our ice cream, mixed in cream, added to cakes, pancakes and essential in most desserts. Perfumers are not so interested in the flavour, but more so the scent of vanilla. The sweet fine fragrance of vanilla is so well known that it almost makes anyone hungry for the familiar taste.
The vanilla vine grows to a height of approximately 4 metres in tropical countries like Reunion (Bourbon), Madagascar, Mexico, Tahiti and recently Papua New Guinea. Vanilla aromatica and Vanilla plantifolia with its fragrant greenish-yellow flowers are the plants used for commercial purposes. The capsule or the vanilla bean is used for the extraction of an odiferous oil which perfumers call the “Absolute oil of Vanilla”. It is exceedingly fine and very sweet. Almost heady in its fragrance and can make some people swoon.
The vanilla pod is cut into small pieces and soaked in 95% ethanol (we used ethanol distilled from Queensland sugar cane) at a certain percentageslide1 of the final amount. Different firms guard this percentage as a trade secret. Most perfumers can detect a good quality absolute from a poorer one. Vanilla beans can be as much as $1.00/gram (AUD) depending the yearly harvest and variance in supply or scarcity. So vanilla is a wonderful scent but does not come cheap. Each country has a different fragrance and quality, with the Mexican absolute often preferred. We prepare our vanilla absolute in the traditional way at Bud Parfums. The vanilla beans are carefully split and scraped with a chef’s knife, then chopped into tiny pieces. Our vanilla maybe macerating and soaking for months until we are happy with the smell of the infusion.
Currently we blend several absolutes from different countries, to make our exclusive exotic vanilla. Recently we have sourced a new supply from Papua New Guinea. The indigenous people there collect the beans growing wild in the jungle. The beans are dried and wrapped in woollen blankets to “sweat” until you can see the fine white crystals of vanillin on the pods. I love the aroma of this “wild” vanilla. It is interesting to note that although these beans are gathered from the jungle and travel on canoes to a broker, the sellers are always aware of the current U.S. dollar price of the beans on the world market. It is a valuable crop to all involved.
Vanillin is a constituent of natural vanilla. Its scent is much drier than the pods. It can be cheaper than the absolute and is now produced synthetically, which can save the rare patches of the vanilla vine. Ethyl vanillin is another derivative and is a fine white crystal. You can find liberal amounts of vanilla in most perfumes depending on how much the perfumer wants to add or can afford.
So if you want a quick “blast” or “snort” of vanilla just take a little whiff of that vanilla essence you have in the cupboard and you will see exactly what I mean. “Ah, vanilla…..”

Differences between Natural-Organic and Synthetic Scents

In the world of fragrances today, you will discover ones that include a high percentage of synthetic ingredients as well as ones that include natural ones. At one time in history, all scents came from natural-organic sources such flowers and herbs, but these scents were expensive to make and buy. Chemists then discovered how to replicate scents in an artificial manner. Since the artificial scents cost less to use in manufacturing, the perfume companies began to mass-produce their scents at a price that was affordable for all consumers. We provide you an explanation of both kinds of scents below in order for you to understand their differences.

Description of Synthetic Scents

Companies manufacture artificial or synthetic scents by combining synthetically created aromatics together into unique blends. While these fragrances may provide a long lasting aroma for you throughout the day, only some are from natural sources. The one benefit for these scents is for the industry since the formulations of the perfumes can be precisely replicated in mass quantities. We discuss the drawbacks to these scents latter in this information.

Information about Natural Scents

In comparison to the synthetic makeup of artificial scents, naturally based perfumes contain scents that come from plants, such as trees, fruits, flowers, herbs and roots along with animal sources for  fragrances. These elements go through a distillation process to create essential oils. The perfumer skillfully combines various ones of these essential oils to create the top, middle and bottom notes of their unique perfumes. Unfortunately supply and price of materials can vary wildly each harvest.

Drawbacks of Synthetic Fragrances

With synthetic fragrances, you will be applying artificial ingredients to the skin. These ingredients often include known allergens that may trigger respiratory problems, asthma attacks and skin rashes for the wearers. In addition, they may contain neurotoxins that can seep deep into the body over time to negatively affect the nervous system and the immune system. When you wear or dispose of unused synthetic scents, their ingredients can also pollute the environment.

Benefits of Natural Perfumes

You can avoid the issues of synthetic scents when you turn to natural ones. Only if you are allergic to a particular element in nature will you have an adverse reaction (some citrus oils or lavender for example) to natural-organic perfumes. As a rule, people are only allergic to a small percentage of plants, so they easily can find a natural scent that is ideal for them. Also, natural-organic elements are gentler on the skin.  In addition, these products will not taint the environment.

The Art of Fragrance Layering: Choosing the Perfect Scent Blends

If you wonder what the art of fragrance layering is all about, it is simply a way of combining multiple scents in a unique manner to ensure that you stand out from the crowd. We are not talking about ordering your own perfume blend here. Instead, we are talking about you using scents that you already have at home together to achieve a unique result or buying multiple ones for the same purpose. You can apply the scents at one time or at separate times during the day. When you perfect this art, you can match scents to suit your mood or needs at the moment.

Understand the Scents That Complement Each Other

An important part of layering scents is to understand which ones that complement each other. For a couple of examples, citrus and floral blends well together, as do the wood and floral scents for layering. When you apply both scents at the same time, apply the lighter one first and then the heavier one. As the heavier one dissipates, the lighter scent will still be present.

Apply the Scents at Different Times

You will not need to apply all scents at the same time, though, as we mention above. An example of this is that you can start off with a light floral for your workday and add a heavier wood scent over it as you move to your evening activity. In this way, your scent is bolder for the nighttime hours and lighter at the office.

You Can Dab Scents on Your Hair, Clothing and Skin

Another way to layer scents is by dabbing a heavy one on your skin, a medium one on your clothes and a light one on your hair. As move through the crowd, these scents will evaporate in a unique combination to provide you with a signature aroma that is all your own.

Keep It Simple at First

When you first begin to layer your own scents, keep it simple. Vanilla and wood tones are an ideal place to start or citrus and spice, such as orange and cinnamon. Once you master the art of layering in this simple manner, you can move on to additionally complex combinations such as applying a floral tone first, a citrus tone next and then a wood tone. While some believe the heavier scent should come last, this depends upon whether or not you are applying all the scents at the same time.

Come to Bud Parfums to learn additional tips on the art of fragrance layering and to purchase quality perfumes. You even can rely on us for custom scents that you create with us according to your preferences.

Scent of a Woman: The Hidden Appeal of Perfumes

Just ask men about the hidden appeal of perfumes as far as a scent of a woman. Aromas imprint a memory into the mind of men in either a negative or positive manner. When males find the scent pleasing, it attracts them to females, but the opposite also can occur if men dislike the aroma. Perfumes on women even intensify sexual feelings in the opposite sex.

Scents Create Memories

The aroma of a perfume will travel up through the olfactory system where signals will be sent to the brain, and instantly, the brain creates a memory with the scent. Whoever is wearing the perfume at the time imprints on the mind of all who smell the aroma.

Perfumes Can Stir Desire

When the scents hit the men right, perfumes stir feelings of physical desire. Women need to be careful, though, since the minute amount in just a few pressure points will pull men to them, too much of a good thing may make the men run in the opposite direction. Perfumes are of such fine quality that you should always lightly dab them on, or spray them on your body.

Women Create an Air of Mystery with Perfumes

When women purchase and apply perfumes that contain a number of different tones, they create an air of mystery around them. Men and others will try to identify the various tones. Just examine a few of the perfumes that we make here at Bud Parfums for women in the information below to learn what we mean by all this:

• Autumn is a combination of chocolate, strawberry, vanilla cream and caramel. What a yummy assortment of aromas. As you wear this scent throughout the day or evening, different tones will be noticeable.

• Elysium contains jasmine, neroli, sweet orange, geranium, lilac, musk, orange blossom, petitgrain, and bergamot oils. The aroma of this combination makes all think about a sunny, spring day. Everyone around you will try to identify the flower scents that their noses are catching a whiff of as you pass by them.

• Scarlet is our slightly sinful selection with its bright-red colour with a tinge of orange. You will feel bold, confident and a bit naughty when you wear this selection. In addition, the mixture of gardenia, cinnamon, bergamot, lime, orange, jasmine, and ylang ylang will have people wondering what is that delightful aroma in the air.

Turn to Bud Parfums for further information on the hidden appeal of perfumes as far as the scent of a woman. We manufacture all of our scents with the finest of ingredients. On top of this, you can customise a scent to suit your specific preferences.

The Fragrant Man and His Captivating Effects

Aromatherapy and the history of fragrances dates back to the earliest of times, in Egypt, Europe, Asia, and in every corner of the world were found those who could meld scents together that had captivating effects on people. All types of expertly mixed fragrances were sought, that is why royalty has always attracted master perfumers to produce scents from the most cherished oils.

Such high quality and often rare ingredients produce fragrances that have an almost mystical and captivating effect on those who venture to take a closer whiff.

The Fragrant Man

Times have changed the ways that perfumes are made, machines now churn out mass produced vats of scented oils, from ingredients that are not all-natural. This has caused a decline of the specialness of perfumes, and the real intentions and purpose for their creation – to lure for love and romance, and as a means to preserve memories through scented smells.

Returning to the roots of this ancient practice, Howard Jarvis, who has worked with master perfumer Mr Jonathon Midgley, is determined to rekindle the spark of the public’s interest back to that of the 19th Century’s golden era of fragrances and perfume making. To accomplish this, Howard – a modern-day fragrance man, uses the finest of nature’s purest oils and raw materials to concoct very special blends of perfumes.

Essentially, the motivation behind Bud Parfums is the belief that everyone deserves to enjoy the wonderful sensation of smelling essential oils.

Perfumes for Men and Women

Perfumes in the past were used by men just as much as women, although, times are changing again and men today are rediscovering deep aromatic scents and their benefits – perfumes that stimulate women’s interest. Names such as Chocolate Soldier, Assassin, and El Diablo are just a few of the perfumes that are designed for gentlemen who appreciate exotic smells that stimulate the senses.

As for the ladies, specially formulated perfumes such as Ooh La La, Fluer De Lilac, and Jezebel, each have their own unique scented flavours that are proven to affect men in subtle ways.

Custom Perfumes

Bud Parfums can make custom perfumes that suit a person’s personal tastes, skin type and personality, to produce a much personalised signature scent. It is a rare and very unique gift idea that is assured to impress anyone. All are welcome to visit Bud Parfums perfumery, in Warburton, Victoria, to experience a warm, old-world atmosphere, ripe with over 4000 ingredients for making the finest perfumes.

Why Perfumes and Colognes Smell Different From Each Other

When it comes to types of fragrances, perfumes are at the top of the list as far as quality with colognes coming in second. While consumers today consider that both perfumes and colognes offer the body a pleasant aroma, this is where their similarity ends. They differ in formulation, which is why each has its own unique scent and lasting power. A perfume will last throughout the day and into the night while people may need to reapply cologne for it to last since it evaporates at a faster rate.

Formulation of Perfume

The reason that perfume lasts longer than cologne does is the fact that it contains 20-percent to 30-percent volatile natural oils. Quality perfumeries will stick with as many natural ingredients as possible. Colognes can have a high percentage of chemical ingredients. If you wonder why colognes are less expensive than perfumes are, this is the main reason. You also need to remember that just a dab on each of your pulse points will do with a perfume. Never apply in excess as it will overwhelm those around you.

In addition, the formulation of perfume provides a multilevel experience for the wearers of it. Each level is called a ‘note’ and will have its own unique scent and endurance. Most perfumes will have a top note, middle note and base note. The top note evaporates gradually the first few hours after application in the morning, then the middle note hangs on for a few more hours and the base note is likely to follow you to bed that night unless you shower. For this reason, perfumes transform throughout the time you wear them, providing a unique aroma at each hour of the day or night.

Formulation of Colognes

Colognes are single-note scents that provide the same aroma no matter how short or long a person wears them. They do not have a lasting power of perfumes, though, since their formulation contains only about two to four percent of the volatile oils in a base of typically water and alcohol. Scents from colognes evaporate by the end of the day where you may need to dab or spray on more before evening. As a result, your bottle of cologne will not last as long as a bottle of perfume will and this may negate the savings that cologne appears to offer you.

The reason why perfumes and colognes smell different from each other comes down to their formulations. Perfumes are the highest quality fragrances on the market today, and you should indulge yourself with a bottle or two from our company at your earliest convenience.

Effects of Fragrance on Emotions: Moods and Physiology

Just as the aroma of food influences the body’s appetite, fragrances can trigger certain emotional responses depending upon our initial memory imprint of them. As a smell enters the nostrils and travels through the olfactory system, it affects different areas of the body along its journey. During this process, a fragrance transforms from a mere smell into a memory, whether it is pleasant or not depends upon the circumstances.

The Physiological Effects of Fragrances

When you encounter a scent, the olfactory system triggers responses from the limbic system in the brain that control moods and emotions as well as the hippocampus area, which is where the brain forms and stores memories. As you smell a scent, a memory forms in connection to it, such as a romantic evening with the person you love. You will forever connect their aroma or fragrance with pleasure, love and that person each time to come in contact with the exact scent.

How the Mind Associates a Fragrance with a Memory

Since your brain stores the memory of the scent in the hippocampus, the mind associates your feelings about this memory with the aroma. If you remember the event with a positive event, your mood lifts and you feel joy. On the other hand, when the event connected with a scent is unpleasant, your memory m ay depress your mood. For example, if you pass by a person wearing an excess of fragrance, you may remember how your olfactory system was overwhelmed to the point of dislike.

A Fragrance Impacts Each Person in a Unique Manner

People vary in the way they react to scents. While women are drawn to flowering, sweet scents, men prefer woodsy ones. In addition, the scents themselves smell different on each individual due to their unique body chemistry. Perfumes intermingle with a person’s sweat and chemical makeup to produce individualised aromas.

The Power of the Effects of Fragrance on Moods and Physiology

Fragrances have such a strong effect on moods and physiology of the human body that women and men both apply them in order to attract a mate. Perfumes provide a multi-layer experience that can vary throughout the time people wear them. Different tones in these fragrances evaporate at their own rates to transform the scent from one hour to the next. When you wear them to heighten a romantic experience, they can increase the physical attraction between you and your object of desire.

Pressure Points Matter: Tips on Which Parts of Your Body Should You Put Perfume On

Applying fragrances to one’s body has been a custom for centuries for various reasons ranging from practicing religious beliefs to covering up unpleasant body odours. Today, people apply perfumes to enhance the aromas of their bodies to please those who they come in contact with daily or to heighten their physical attraction to others. While you may enjoy wearing a variety of these scents, you might not understand the pressure points or pulse points to apply them on to receive the best results from your efforts. These points are places on the body where you can feel your heart beat, and it is thought that when you apply fragrances on them that they last longer and release all their tones with greater efficiency.

The Pulse Points on Your Body

Behind the Ears

When you place the fragrance behind your ears, the veins are close to the surface of the skin. As a result, the aroma of the perfume is released automatically for immediate effects.

Inside Areas of the Elbows

The inside areas of the elbows is another pulse point that provides a subtler effect than behind the ears, but is no less effective when you apply a scent on these areas.

The Belly Button

Inside your belly button provides a hidden place in which to apply fragrances. The aroma will gradually float up or down from this area as you move through your day or night.

Behind the Knees

Another one of the pressure points to remember is the back of your knees. Perfumes will evaporate gently throughout your day allowing the scents to move upward on and outward from your body. Others will wonder where the delightful aroma is coming from with these pulse points.

Inside of the Wrists

If you express your thoughts with the help of your hands, you may consider applying a bit of perfume to the inside of your wrists. The heat from this area of the body interacts with the scents to diffuse them in the air almost immediately. With each wave of your hands, you will broadcast a bit of aroma through the air.

Base of the Throat

The base of the throat maximises the effects of your perfume, especially in romantic situations. Each time that your beloved hugs you the fragrance will gleefully travel up his or her nostrils. It will excite the senses and heighten the physical attraction between you and him or her.

Of course, to receive the highest possible results from pressure points, you must first start off with quality perfumes, such as the ones from Bud Parfums. We are master perfumers who deliver fascinating scents that we make from the purest of ingredients.

Scent and Seduction: How Can Perfumes Arouse Your Senses?

At one time in history, scents were applied to the body to mask an unpleasant body odour since daily bathing was not always a practice, or they were used in religious rituals. Today, manufactured fragrances serve a much different purpose. Men and women both admit that perfumes can entice and arouse their senses and therefore, their emotions for each other. Scent and seduction just seem to flow together in almost a mystical way.

How Scents Arouse Your Senses

Fragrances stimulate the limbic system of the brain, which dictates our emotional reaction to a variety of triggers, including the scents we smell with our nose. Just as the aroma of certain foods increases our appetites, the scent of a person can heighten our desire for him or her. In addition, innovations in manufacturing fragrances have allowed companies to produce scents with both undertones and overtones to increase their effect on our senses.

Certain perfumes bring back a childhood memory that is deep within our minds that we relate to joy and happiness. When you smell these scents on other people, you are instantly attracted to them without really understanding why at times. Of course, if you associate a scent with an unpleasant situation, the reverse may happen when you smell a similar aroma on others. Scents can be appealing or unappealing, though, without triggering any memories.

Scents Affect Both Sexes

Both men and women are just as susceptible to the alluring effects of fragrances. While women wear floral, light scents, men will wear musky to woody scents. Men admit to becoming aroused not only by a woman’s physical appearance, but also by her aroma. The same is true for women with men. Attraction may occur on a non-sexual or sexual level depending upon the circumstances, but scents can help to heighten the sexual experience during a romantic evening.

Only a Little Is Necessary

Men and women need to remember when applying a scent that only a little is necessary to stimulate a positive reaction. If a person applies an excessive amount of fragrance, he or she can overwhelm the senses of others and drive them away instead of being alluring.

When in search of perfumes, or to learn additional information about the connection between scent and seduction, contact Bud Parfums. We carry fragrances for both men and women, and we make our products from high-quality natural ingredients. You also can order free samples of our products or custom order a unique perfume that no one else has at present. Our company designs all of our creations to tantalise the senses.

Choose the Right Perfume for the Right Occasion

When it comes to fragrance, there is nothing more enchanting than wearing the right perfume for the right occasion. What is more, you can select perfume fragrances and scents according to the season, your mood and even the time of day.

In truth, “just wearing” perfume is way out of fashion. Today, there are certain perfumes that make a statement and add a certain ambiance as you enter a room. In fact, there are numerous amazing perfumes that are not only captivating but so affordable that you can have a fragrance for every occasion. Frankly, todays perfumes are most definitely part of one personal expression.

The Right Perfume for the Right Occasion

When choosing a perfume to wear, it is important to consider the time of day and the occasion. Reflect upon the event or occasion, the people you are meeting, the environment plus the time of day. For instance, there is a huge difference between evening and day time wear. Evening wear can include movie night with the kids or an intimate dinner with your sweetheart. Daywear can include a variety of scents for the office, running errands, high noon tea or a day in the park.

The History of Perfumes

Since ancient times, people have been scenting their bodies for various reasons ranging from covering up unpleasant body odour to preparing the dead for burial. Perfumes are fragrant solutions that contain essential oils from flowers and other types of plants along with aroma compounds and other quality ingredients. For the most part, perfumes last longer on the body than colognes do since their ingredients are purer. The history of perfumes is a long and interesting one as is evident by our following timeline.

4000 BC – 2000 BC

Archeologists uncovered proof that perfumes date back to at least, 4000 BC in a dig on the island of Cyprus. To date, this is the oldest proof found on the existence of this scented liquid, but in a simpler form than we know it today. Then, in about 2000 BC, Tapputi, the first known chemist in the world who was also a perfume maker, was written about in a cuneiform tablet in Mesopotamia. Around this time, perfume became popular in Egypt, Greece and in the Roman Empire for various uses, including paying homage to their gods.

Perfume in the Sixth and Seventh Centuries

During the sixth century, the Islamic people turned to scents for religious purposes. Scents also were written about in the seventh century in The Harshacharita, a famous Hindu text, with the specific mention of the use of agarwood oil in northern parts of India.

Perfume from the 11th to 13th Centuries

Europe actively traded for various goods with Islamic countries during the 11th century, and this is when perfume was introduced to Europe along with the return of the crusaders in the 13th century. Spices and other items were traded for the scents at this time. Let us not forget that during the 12th century, perfume went through a transformation in its formula in Hungary when alcohol was mixed with essential oils. This was the start of the modern perfume that we know today.

Move Forward to the 16th and 17th Centuries

Rene Le Florentin, a perfumer to Catherine de’ Medici in Italy, refined the perfume of the time before taking it to France. The French added their own touches and even introduced perfumed gloves in 1656 along with forming a guild for perfume makers.

The 18th Century to the Present

In France during the 18th century, King Louis XIV adapted the use of perfume to the point that he was known as the perfumed king. Napoleon also used this scented liquid in exorbitant amounts during his reign in the 19th century. Through the 19th and 20th centuries, numerous other advancements and refinements were made in perfumes, as their popularity grew worldwide, which brings the history of perfumes to the present day.

Is Your Perfume Boring?

Have you noticed that perfumes seem a little boring lately? Does it look like the big firms are re-releasing another copy of last year’s best seller? Do you wonder if they spend more on the advertising than the actual ingredients in the bottle? You are not alone, as a growing trend of savvy smart shoppers go online and have “discovered” niche perfumes and their creators. (See Natural Perfumers Guild).

Howard Jarvis of Bud Parfums noticed this “cheapening” of ingredients as he studied the art of making fine perfumes over the last 10 years. Under the patient tutorship of Jonathon Midgley from Damask Perfumes who together share the passion of fine quality ingredients, they began to reverse the downhill trend and return to traditional fine perfumes. They feel the money spent on making a perfume should be on the best of nature’s raw materials and NOT the ad campaign.

Based in Australia where there is a growing interest in not only planting crops for essential oils, but also a huge amount of research into the Australian native plants both for their fragrances and traditional medicine uses. These oils the world has not seen or even smelt. With enchanting names like “Budhawood”, “Lemon myrtle”, “Lemon scented tea tree”, “Huon pine”, “Western Australian Sandalwood” and “Fire tree oil” as the list grows. Newly discovered (yet, ancient some say 40,000 years old) resins, earthy, woody, fresh lemony, crisp, sharp, tangy wonderful scents.

A Pandora’s Box of treasures for a skilled perfumer. Now take a maverick or avant garde approach and compose perfumes exclusively for customers with whimsical names for a perfume like: ”Ooh La La ” to “Ugly Bastard”. While “Ooh La La” could be a fine French perfume with loads of vanilla, it still carries a dash of the sweet lemon scented tea tree which makes it very different.

Then, make the perfumes affordable by offering them in various sizes so people can buy the quantity that suits their budget. From 2ml vials to 200mls. Next, give people the freedom of choosing both a refill size and refillable bottles, so you can top up your own perfume and not throw away your old bottle. Or, better still buy an exclusive hand blown glass bottle made by a local artist to have a truly unique piece of art. You can now have your very own special perfume (custom blended) in its very own bottle, which no one else in the world has, or choose from the range of limited editions. In the words of Eckhart Tolle, ”You are here to enable the divine purpose of the universe to unfold. That is how important you are!”

Howard has listened to many customers about what they really want in a fine perfume.  A yearning for romance, dreams and beautiful memories. It’s about wanting to feel special. A feeling that with all of life’s stresses that everyone deserves a “little” luxury. Meanwhile, Howard Jarvis of Bud Parfums is content that the world will smell a little bit better……
